An active volcano!

The huge volcanic eruption took place in the 17th century BC. Since then, there have been many smaller eruptions, while the last –as unlikely it may sound–was in 1950!
Already in 1949 small earthquakes had started shaking Santorini. In January 1950, an eruption opened the way for magma which began to spurt on Nea Kameni. The new lava is the youngest in Greece!
