In its 3,000 year history, from its
foundation in the 5th millennium
BC to its burial in the mid-second
millennium BC (the volcanic eruption
buried it for about 3,500 years), the
settlement of Akrotiri grew from a small
coastal fishing village to a large cosmopolitan
port. It also participated dynamically in
the development of the Cycladic culture
across the Aegean Sea.
