Celebrations in Santorini

Along with most Greek women, who are called Maria, there are about 50 churches dedicated to Virgin Mary celebrating today! Among the most important celebrations of the Assumption held in Santorini are the church of "Panagia Episkopi" in Mesa Gonia, the church of the "Assumption" in Akrotiri, the "Assumption" in Firostefani and in Megalochori and "Panagia Kokini" in Karterados.

After morning service today, which usually starts at 7 am and ends after 10 am, at the church of "Panagia Episkopi" one of the oldest festivals in Greece takes place. The worshipers eat the traditional “panigyri” made of fava and local wine. So try a nutritious breakfast that you will remember for years to come and who knows, you may get used to having fava as breakfast!

In the courtyard of the Assumption of Virgin Mary in Akrotiri an authentic island feast is held this year with traditional “panigyri”, plenty of wine and dancing.

In the Assumption at Firostefani the Matins begins at 7 am, followed by the ceremony at 9 am and then traditional “panigyri” is distributed: cod with potatoes and wine.

Come on, let's join the locals for breakfast and learn local customs and
“panigyri”on these beautifully decorated churches with colorful little flags, which are ideal for photos! Since ... when in Rome, do as the Romans do!
