The caldera is filling again..

The huge Minoan eruption, which took place in the 17th century BC was not the last volcanic eruption. For the last two thousand years, the enormous caldera which was created by the eruption has been the scene of renewed volcanism, as the caldera is filling again and the island is, once more, changing its shape.
The two volcanic islets in the middle of the caldera, Palaia and Nea Kameni, are the newest pieces of land in Europe. They were formed after the Minoan eruption and have been developing for the past 2000 years. The different colours of the lavas reveal the different centuries that the eruption took place.
