Aegean Sea, so old yet to new!

Ancient Greeks used to call “goats” the sea waves too, presumably because they jump when the sea is rough. Artemidorus of Ephesus, (2nd c. AD) writes: "we are used to calling the big waves goats and the most terrible sea is called Aegean Sea."
Similarly, Aegean islanders call "sheep" the big waves nowadays, just like the French call them «moutons» and the English white horses”. Could a more suitable name be given to a sea so rough, full of "goats"?
