Herbert List (1903-1975) photographed for many magazines such as Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Life and had permanent cooperation with Magnum Photos photo agency. His black and white photos from Greece date from 1937 until 1939 - landscapes, sculpture, ruined temples, people’s figures at sea and are flooded with light and beauty, while there is a total absence of the World War II threat and the 20th century in general.
His work influenced many Greek photographers and holds a prominent place in the history of photography in Greece.

However, the war prevented the publication of his book "Hellas" which was released in its final form in 1993.
