The Remembrance Day for the Genocide
of Greeks of Pontus will be celebrated tomorrow instead of the International Day
on 19th May. It aims at reminding the events of a
dramatic period of persecution, genocide and the uprooting of the Greek
populations of Pontus (today Northern Turkey), which lasted from
1914 to 1922. Memorials have been erected
throughout the world.
One such memorial has also been erected in Santorini by the
local Pontiac Association in the small square near the Port Police in Fira.
After the memorial service at the Metropolis in Fira at 10.00 tomorrow morning, a small ceremony
will be held at this memorial at 10.30 which will stand as a point for further
reflection
