Local architecture

The local architecture of the island is magnificent. Cave houses dug inside the pumice on top of the cliffs, narrow winding paths moving among the houses, terraces which are the lower house ceiling. All Santorini villages have white washed buildings where the blue-domed churches dominate.
You shouldn't also miss the medieval, Venetian style castles and citadels, where the aristocrats used to live for centuries. These citadels used to be perched high up the hills of the villages so that they could be protected from the pirates.
